FR - BMW values the importance of aesthetics and technological innovation, and supports photography as an original, distinct art form. Over the past years, the work of the first three prize winners has been showcased to photography professionals and the wider public. In , Alexandra Catiere was the winner of the first edition. This young Belarusian artist is renowned for the delicacy and intelligence of her work, which successfully combines traditional and avant-garde techniques. In , BMW supported young French photographer Marion Gronier as she tackled a personal project on the human figure and its masks. In extensive series he portrays individual members of social groups — be it sports clubs, army corps or professional guilds — who demonstrate their affiliation to the specific collective through external signs such as uniforms, headdress, make-up, posture or even their body shape. The transformation of human to beast is a central aspect in pagan rituals passed down over the centuries that celebrate the turn of the seasons, fertility, life and death — some still alive today in carnival or Advent traditions. The costumes often represent the devil, billy-goats, wild boars or the Grim Reaper; they utilize masks, horns, bells, animal materials such as fur and bones, and plant materials such as straw and pine twigs. In this series, the photographer continues his work at the crossroads of documentary, concept and ethnology. In the uniform, there was something conceptual, cold, that I liked. This is a major event devoted to photography where the small city temporarily becomes the world capital of this art. Sparks is a multidimensional portrait of a forgotten but still raging contemporary European conflict: the war in Ukraine. Ukrainians are fighting each other, with government forces on one side and pro-Russian separatists on the other. Wiktoria Wojciechowska went in search of combatants and victims to recount its impact on the lives of ordinary people. The title, Sparks, refers to incandescent shrapnel that mercilessly pierces the walls of houses. Civilians living near the front call it???????
