When someone is egotistical they spend a lot of their time and energy trying to impress other people. They want to be liked above and beyond anything else even if that means exaggerating the truth , boasting about their accomplishments and talking about themselves more than most people would. Dating someone like this can be quite tiring and you may end up wondering how relevant you are in the relationship or whether your presence is only required to boost their self esteem. They may seem so full of themselves that there is little room for you. Often people who are like this when you first meet settle down as a relationship develops. If you think you may be dating an egotist bear in mind the following. Often people who come across as extremely egocentric are actually quite insecure under all the bravado. They may be loud and boastful in the hope that no-one will see their low self-esteem.
Egocentrism refers to someone's inability to understand that another person's view or opinion may be different than their own. It represents a cognitive bias, in that someone would assume that others share the same perspective as they do, unable to imagine that other people would have a perception of their own. Another development theorist, David Elkind, expanded on this idea of egocentrism to with regards to adolescence. Elkind described "A heightened self-awareness and self-conscious," saying that teenagers often feel that others are watching them and that they are extraordinarily concerned with what others think of them.
At first, you were taken in by his charm and impressed by his self-confidence. An egotistic person can be someone who is prone to talking about themselves frequently, or someone who appears vain or boastful. It can also be used to indicate someone who is opinionated, self-centered, or selfish, as well. If you feel you are dating an egotistic individual, work towards dealing with the egotism in the relationship.
